Criminal Record Check - Personal Support Worker (PSW)

In today's society, we are in an era of rapid development of technology and information. We also frequently communicate with people of different backgrounds, and as the population grows and ages, so does the need for personal and family support workers.

This has led to the importance of background checks, with a recent survey by Angus Reed and BackCheck showing that nearly three-quarters of Canadians said they were influenced by criminal record checks when looking for a home service provider.

What is Criminal Background Check (CRC)?

A criminal record check is basically a check to determine if a person has ever been charged or convicted of a crime. There are two ways to check whether you have a criminal record:

  • Name-based criminal record checks:

    • Uses solely your name and date of birth

    • This is a most widely used and accepted document for background screening purposes that is checked against the RCMP’s Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system.

    • Using name-based checks has weaknesses in authenticating individuals due to identical surnames, spelling differences, use of nicknames, legal name changes, and deliberate name changes to avoid criminal records.

  • Certified criminal record checks:

    • When name-based criminal record checks do not provide a definite way of confirming a person's identity, you may be asked to provide fingerprints.

    • A fingerprint search of the National Repository of Criminal Records is conducted by RCMP's Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS).

Criminal record checks can further reassure potential clients that their safety and security are of the utmost importance to having a Personal Support Worker (PSW) with professionalism and integrity.

PSW is a popular occupation with a high threshold for personal security and privacy, and it is also a very competitive industry. So completing and having a criminal record check is not only a plus for clients and your own resume, it is also likely to be the first step in your success in getting the job you want.
