Parent's Guide to Police Checks for School Volunteers
Every fall, schools need parent volunteers to help in classrooms, coach teams, and support programs. To ensure student safety, these roles typically require a police background check. This guide explains the process so you can get yours quickly and be ready to help.
Why These Checks Are Necessary
These checks protect children by screening volunteers for relevant information, including:
Criminal convictions
Outstanding charges or court orders
Findings of guilt under the Youth Criminal Justice Act
While some roles may only need a standard check, any position working directly with children usually requires a more comprehensive Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).

What's the Difference Between the Checks?
Criminal Record Check (CRC): Lists adult criminal convictions.
Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC): Includes convictions plus outstanding charges and court orders.
Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC): Includes all of the above and is specifically for roles involving children or other vulnerable people.
Why Timing is Critical
Volunteer spots fill up fast. Delays in your background check could mean you miss out. Applying early ensures you're cleared on time.
Please Note: Always confirm the exact type of check required by your school or organization before applying.
